Priests are not immune to the fears and anxieties many are feeling right now.

โ€œAt first I said I was โ€˜frightenedโ€™, but then I changed the word to โ€˜overwhelmedโ€™. I was โ€˜overwhelmedโ€™ that something like this could happen,โ€ Sydney Catholic Schoolsโ€™ chaplain Father Gary Perritt (pictured)ย said in reference to theย COVID-19ย pandemic.

โ€œI think all of us are overwhelmed,โ€ he observed.

โ€œIt (COVID-19) has slowed us down and got us to think about โ€˜What are the essential things?โ€™ and โ€˜Who are the essential people?โ€™

โ€œThereโ€™s a lot of silence at the moment. Maybe this silence is a new habit that could teach us to listen more to one anotherโ€ โ€“ Father Gary Perritt

โ€œI know for me, Iโ€™ve called people I havenโ€™t spoken to for ages to ask โ€˜Are you okay?โ€™ Itโ€™s prompted me to realise how important people are in my life. People I normally see regularly, I miss them. I video-conference, but itโ€™s not the same.โ€

Asked, where does he find God in all of this? Fr Gary answered simply: โ€œWe can find God in one another and in helping one another.โ€

โ€œLook at Him in our doctors, who fall tired and exhausted โ€ฆ police (who) patrol deserted streets, and they are not with their families because they are taking care of ours,โ€ he said, citing the Archbishop of Lima, Carlos Gustavo Castillo Mattasoglio.

โ€œThe coronavirus has helped churchgoers, school teachers and students realise that churches are not being closed. Buildings are being closed. You are the church!โ€ โ€“ Father Gary Perritt

โ€œThereโ€™s a lot of silence at the moment. Maybe this silence is a new habit that could teach us to listen more to one another,โ€ reflected Fr Gary.

โ€œThe way we are treating one another brings out the quiet heroes, heroes we sometimes hadnโ€™t noticed before,โ€ Fr Gary added, listing the school teachers, the nurses, the truck drivers delivering goods to our supermarkets, among others.

โ€œThe coronavirus has helped churchgoers, school teachers and students realise that churches are not being closed. Buildings are being closed. You are the church!

โ€œWeโ€™ve seen all sorts of outreach from these closed buildings; (priests)ย calling more peopleย than weโ€™ve ever called before, priests streaming masses. This way, the church comes to you.โ€

Fr Garyโ€™s tips to stop feeling overwhelmed and alone:

  • Talk. Donโ€™t keep your fear to yourself because it can then escalate. Tell people youโ€™re frightened because itโ€™s a natural response.
  • Iย was overwhelmed by all the COVID-19 media so I switched to online media, so I could take back some control over my life.
  • Some sites on the internet that helped me include theย Sunday Mass Online with Bishop Brianย โ€“ it is very well produced โ€“ and theย Diocese of Lismoreโ€™s live online Sunday Masses. Bishop Greg Homemingโ€™s homilies, his reflections on the Sunday readings and the coronavirus have been wonderful. Theyโ€™ve helped me in my frightened, overwhelmed state and calmed me down.
